Our brains make a thousand computations in the first seven seconds we see someone. We’re unconsciously evaluating their body language, expression, tone of voice, and other nonverbals before you even get to your opening line. While it may be difficult to spit out something perfectly charming in those seven seconds, one thing you can be sure will win you points is some good old fashioned eye contact. That’s right, being divided by a screen does not absolve you of the eye contact rule you learned in Public Speaking 101 – although it may be better described as webcam contact these days.
I know what you’re going to say. But how do I know how my audience is buying my pitch if I’m staring into that glowing red dot at the top of my screen instead of at their nodding heads?
If you’ve yet to take our executive presence training courses, my answer might intimidate you: trust your story. Once you have the tools to build an engaging story, you won't need to worry if your delivery is landing. Their heads will be nodding! But if you’re sticking to a data driven presentation without intention to keep attention, I’d bet you’ve seen some heads nodding off.
Neuroscience tells us that humans are masters of mirroring. Set a confident tone by showing a client your full attention and dedication through these nonverbal cues. Eye contact and genuineness builds trust. Take it a step further and lose the slides while you’re at it. Hold virtual court and lock eyes with your clients to make the most impact while they travel with you up the narrative arc. Lead with empathy. And just remember, it all starts with the eyes.
